Ian McFadyen is a writer, poet and retired teacher of English, living in Peebles and in North West Sutherland. His poetry is inspired by the landscapes, soundscapes, creatures and features in the natural world and features re-imaginings of historical stories, bairnrhymes and a growing collection of 'owersettins.' He writes poetry in Scots and English, and has been a winner of the James McCash prize for poetry in Scots.

Ian has one published collection, Tom's Boat and Other Poems, published by Peebles Arts Festival in 1996. He is one of the poets in Jorum: Six Poets in Border Scots (Scottish Borders Council Arts Service, 2000), is included in several other Scottish anthologies and has had poetry published in many literary periodicals. In 1988 he was recorded in the In Verse series of programmes made for STV by Michael Grieve. Over the years he has had both creative and performing input to various theatre shows and continues to write and publish in literary magazines. 

Ian enjoys performing readings of his work. He contributes regularly to Peebles Folk Club and Innerleithen’s Music, Verse and Stories evenings. He has read at Nairn Book and Arts Festival, Peebles Arts Festival, the School of Scottish Studies Archives, Edinburgh Poetry Society and the Edinburgh Arts Club. In 2017 he will be performing a show 'Why The Birds Sing' at TradFest Dùn Èideann.
